The Lyceum

The Lyceum
A beautiful and more traditional theatre, the Lyceum must be visited to appreciate the gold and glossary within. It was originally opened in 1897 and was the proud design of WGR Sprague. This ‘theatrical designer’ created some of the most splendid musical halls and theatres in London including The Strand and the Aldwych but unfortunately non of his musical halls remain. Spragues 1068 seat theatre closed down in 1968 but the listed theatre stayed upright although its use changed dramatically for a brief period and became one of Sheffield’s bingo halls. In 1991 the Lyceum reopened as a Touring theatre holding diverse performances from opera and ballet to dance, musical and pantomime.
