Sheffield Theatres

WELCOME TO SHEFFIELD THEATRES.

Sheffield prides itself on its theatres and the performances and productions that are there for all to see! Here is just a taste of where you can see live entertainment in the city centre.

The Crucible

The Crucible theatre is Sheffields main producing venue within the group of Sheffield Theatres. It was opened in 1971 and boasts 980 seats in the splendid circular auditorium. The theatre was designed by a Tanya Moiseiwitsch. The successful auditorium holds a ‘thrust’ stage which allows the actors to perform in and amongst the audience. This also cleverly gives the members of the audience the opportunity to enjoy spectacles from three sides. Another quirky side to the Crucible is within the auditorium again where the stage can be adapted by adding a false wall which will reduce the acting space when appropriate whilst nothing else around is changed.
The Crucible performances concentrate on detail to the stage scenery, props and costumes because the audience are so intimate with the actors which helps to give a more believable performance.
The Crucible holds splendid performances including a lot of Shakespeare productions and individual playwright work; the annual World Snooker Championship is held at the Crucible

The Lyceum
A beautiful and more traditional theatre, the Lyceum must be visited to appreciate the gold and glossary within. It was originally opened in 1897 and was the proud design of WGR Sprague. This ‘theatrical designer’ created some of the most splendid musical halls and theatres in London including The Strand and the Aldwych but unfortunately non of his musical halls remain. Spragues 1068 seat theatre closed down in 1968 but the listed theatre stayed upright although its use changed dramatically for a brief period and became one of Sheffield’s bingo halls.
In 1991 the Lyceum reopened as a Touring theatre holding diverse performances from opera and ballet to dance, musical and pantomime.

Sheffield Drama Studio
A first class venue, this Sheffield university drama studio holds 200 seats and is situated in a former Baptist Church dating back to 1871. This church was converted into the theatre back in 1970 and boasts various performances of music, opera, dance and drama. The drama studio allows amateur actors and productions to present themselves successfully to the local community and surrounding areas.
