Sheffield Arena

The Hallam FM Arena, previously known as Sheffield Arena, was opened back in 1990 in order to stage the World Student Games, with the intention of transforming Sheffield into an international sports venue. The Sheffield Arena was officially opened by the Queen in May, 1991.At a cost of £34 million pounds the building has certainly proved its worth through hosting various concerts, sporting events, exhibitions, conferences and more.

The Arena was renamed in 1992, following a sponsorship with Hallam FM, one of Sheffield’s local radio stations. It has hosted many major events including Les Miserables, one of the Arenas longest running shows, which put in 35 performances over a four week period back in 1999; Madame Butterfly, Disney On Ice and more. The Arena is a great place to go to for entertainment as is easily accessed – it is only 2 miles from Sheffield City airport, it has its own supertram site which links to Sheffield railway station, Meadowhall & several Park & Ride locations, and of course, we must not forget the many bus routes that also pass the doorstep.

For those of you who may not be familiar with the Sheffield Arena as a music venue, then maybe you will remember it for the hosting of one of the country’s biggest indoor equestrian events, the British Open Show jumping championships, in which the Sheffield Arena undergoes a complete transformation. This involves erecting approx 200 stables to house the horses, laying down a flooring new surface, and the creation of three arenas - the main arena and two additional warming up arenas. Talking of sports, it is also the home of the well known Sheffield Steelers, who are the most successful club in British Ice Hockey. They were formed in 1991 were the first ever fully professional ice hockey team in Great Britain . So whether its music, sport, or a good theatre performance, the Sheffield Arena has it all!
