Jo Cocker

jococker.jpgJoe Cocker

A music icon, and a late 60's superstar, the rock and blues musician Joe Cocker was born in Sheffield in 1944 and is most famous for his film theme 'Up where we belong' (performed with Jennifer Warnes for 'The Officer and the Gentlemen'), the hit single 'You are so beautiful', and the beatles cover of 'With a little help from my friends' (featuring Jimmy Page on guitar) which actually became more successful than the original beatles version - quite unheard of for a beatles penned song.

Onstage, Joe Cocker was recognisable for his physical showmanship while he performed, flailing his arms about, playing air guitar and gesticulating to his band. His singing style can be best described as gravelly and course, he is sometimes referred to as the 'Sheffield Soul Shouter' for this reason, and makes him one of the most recognisable singers in the music industry.

Joe suffered from drug and alcohol problems in the 1970s and his career suffered for the worse. After beating these problems he returned in the 1980s and 1990s with the aforementioned hits of 'You are so beautiful' and 'Up where we belong' and he was introduced to a new generation of fan. Still touring today, Joe Cocker enjoys success and continues to release albums of new material every few years.
